TMITL – August & half of September

So that would be weeks 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37…

August is always such a long month, work wise. Even taking that first week off for Jamaica didn’t take away that feeling of the days stretching. Our district starts school the last week of July/first week of August, which is why the days feel so long. After the more sedate and calm days of summer break, school starting just ramps up the work place. And so it goes.

Olivia Newton-John died on August 8. She was part of the soundtrack of my childhood, especially after Grease came out. Whenever I hear her songs, especially the early ones, I feel like a little girl again. And I didn’t know I had memorized the words to a lot of her songs…

I was sick with a bad cough in the middle of August. I wasn’t as bad as the hubby, who ended up going to the emergency room for a few hours. He got some antibiotics and a prescription and thankfully he’s better now. I still have a bit of a cough but I consider myself mostly recovered at this point. It sucks being sick during the summer. There’s something wrong about it being so hot while living on cough drops.

We went to the A’s game with R’s work mates that last Friday in August. It was a great time but the A’s didn’t get the W. I always love having a reason to wear my A’s gear and this time I wore a new A’s jersey that I had bought a few months before. I’m not retiring my Mulder jersey but it is nice having a bit of choice on game day gear…

During Labor Day weekend, we visited my parents. My dad got a new iPad Air and he needed me to help him set it up. I might be a little jealous of his new tech. The iPad Air is such a pretty device. His old iPad Air was probably the original one. It was stuck on iPadOS 12-point-something. Ye gods!

The weather Labor Day weekend turned HOT and held for a week. After our time in Jamaica, I told myself that I wouldn’t complain about our hot but dry weather but a week of triple digits had me almost wishing for anything but what we were experiencing. It finally cooled down after that short work week (which felt as long as a regular work week).

My right foot bothered me starting the Friday before the long weekend and after the visit with my parents on that Saturday, we spent the rest of the weekend at home, not doing much. My foot HURT and swelled so much that I couldn’t wear my house slippers and had to wear socks. Not sure what happened but it resolved itself for the most part and it’s almost normal now. Almost.

Queen Elizabeth II died on September 8th and now the realms have King Charless III. I confess, I have a fascination with the British royal family that probably stems from my one time school report on Queen Victoria (the previous longest serving monarch of the United Kingdom) as well as the Diana years. Queen Elizabeth was one of those constants in the world and as messy as her family is (and lo, they are MESSY), she was a steady presence of historical proportions. No matter how you feel about the monarchy or the British royal family, she fulfilled her promise of devoting her life to her realms. For goodness’ sake, she was standing with a smile on her face just two days before she died. Her death marks the end of an era. How will her family, her country, the Commonwealth progress after their period of mourning? It will be so interesting to watch…

The new iPhone lineup was announced and we pre-ordered mine that Friday after the announcement. I knew that I wanted a new phone and I contemplated on whether or not to wait another year for the iPhone 15. The notion only lasted a moment. Since I chose the “new” color for the iPhone 12 Pro Max (Pacific Blue), I decided on the new color for the iPhone 14 Pro Max with Deep Purple. My eyes appreciate the bigger screen, so I had to go with the same Pro Max variant.

Deep Purple, iPhone 14 Pro Max

The iPhone 14 Pro Max delivered on Friday the 16th. I HAUNTED the UPS app and decided to go home for lunch in case a signature was actually needed for delivery. Good thing I did go home because yes, I had to sign for it! The UPS driver said he was batting a thousand with signatures for the phones. Yes, he knew what he was delivering.

I will have a full regular person review after a full week of using it but some impressions so far:

  • The build feels basically the same as the iPhone 12 Pro Max with some slight differences like the bigger cameras.
  • The Deep Purple is PRETTY.
  • I’m digging the macro mode a lot.
  • The always on display (AOD) was a little off-putting at first but I might be getting used to it already.
  • The Dynamic Island (really, who thought of that name?) is pretty cool so far.
  • I know I should notice the better refresh rate but it’s not super obvious to me. Yes, it’s smooth but not enough for me to see a huge difference.

I’m interested to see if the battery will take a hit with the AOD. I’m looking forward to using it in my daily life to test the battery. Because I like being above 50% battery, I’ve gotten into the habit of charging my phone after lunch during my day so that I’m at 100% after work. This is just in case we end up doing something after work so that I don’t have to worry about running out of juice while out.

As I started getting used to the iPhone 14 Pro Max, I realized that this was the first time in a long time (if ever) that I’ve gotten a new iPhone that very much resembles my previous iPhone. Apple used to do “S” versions, using the iPhone build for two cycles before changing to a new look or feel. Besides the camera size, the iPhone 12 Pro Max and the iPhone 14 Pro Max are very similar, especially in hand.

Got my TB shot and just the other day got the latest COVID-19 booster. I want to do as much as I can to NOT get COVID-19 and getting the latest booster will help, I’m sure. We have a couple of concerts coming up and I want to be as protected as possible in a big crowd…

The weather has cooled down so much that it actually rained today. GLORIOUS! Maybe I’ll get to wear sweaters to work soon. We’re not quite there yet. The triple digit days might be over at least. Fingers crossed!..
