It’s summer break! Well, for some people. I work for a school district but I’m a 12 month employee, so I’m expected to be at work throughout the summer. And I am, though it’s very easy to take time off and I do, usually the week of 4th of July. Oh, and the long weekends are nice too. My first long weekend will be next weekend, starting with Juneteenth and back at work the following Tuesday. Then off the week after. So nice. I’m looking forward to the quiet times at work and the lazy times at home. Joy!
We had a lunch for my outgoing supervisor on Thursday. It was so nice! The set up was lovely and the food was delicious! CCZ was surprised and appreciative. Honestly, I am in a bit of denial that she has worked her last “official” day with us. (She will be at work one more day, mostly for the board meeting that night as well as to bring the incoming assistant superintendent up to speed on what the department has going on.)
After work that day, a bunch of us headed to The Yard for sunshine, drinks, and a bit of food. I didn’t partake in the food bit but I did have a drink and definitely got a lot of sunshine. It’s always nice getting together with the workmates outside of the office for a little bit.
My co-workers in other departments have said that I’ve been lucky with my supervisors and I agree. I have been very lucky to have such good assistant superintendents who knew how to handle the department but more importantly, the parents and students who have crossed our threshold. CCZ brought so much to our department and our district, leading us to better processes (come on, online enrollment is fantastic!) and fostering a welcoming and supportive office atmosphere. She is leaving us so much better than she found us and I am so grateful for the time that she was with us. I wish she could have stayed longer but I know she will be successful in her future endeavors. And we have social media, so I’ll still be able to “see” her when she posts.
In the story that I’m currently writing, the MMC is a former baseball player. He happens to look a lot like Riley Green so the photos and videos of him at various baseball parks, taking batting practice and pitching, has really just helped with imagining my character doing such things. So, thanks Riley Green. 😉
I’ve been a little stuck on this story. I think I could probably end it but I feel like there’s more to tell with the two characters. I seriously need to sit down for more than a few minutes at a time and just write. Sometimes I feel that the words are hiding from me. Alas.
TV & MOVIES
Murderbot – This show is so good. It’s a little silly but it’s so fun. Even the overly dramatic sci-fi show within the show is funny. And we finally got to the “murder” in Murderbot! (Also, I just realized that he’s called Murderbot. I was going to call him “SecUnit” like the characters in the show call him.) Was it deserved? Mmm, maybe. But I get why doing so at that moment might not have been a good idea.
Sherlock & Daughter – We watched the season finale and well done! I wonder if it was good enough ratings wise for the CW to grant a second season. I hope so! I was quite entertained and I hope we get to see what happens next. It was dutifully mysterious and very entertaining. My verdict = a fun watch and a definite recommend.
Cleaner – This movie was all right. Nothing special. It was nice seeing Daisy Ridley. Not sure why they’re highlighting Clive Owen as “starring” in the movie because, well, no spoilers. I will say that I am not at all into stories or characters where they believe humans are a plague or whatever and need to be eradicated. It’s so without nuance and such a downer. I just can’t relate to that kind of thing. The movie was “meh.”
BOOKS
The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi – Finished the audiobook yesterday. Ohhh, I liked this one! The story was full of adventure and magic and ended well. I just realized it said it was book 1. So will we get more stories about Amina al-Sirafi? I hope so! I’m really enjoying this author (Shannon Chakraborty).
The River of Silver: Tales from the Daevabad Trilogy – This one is by the same author as above. I guess I can’t get enough of Daevabad because I’m dutifully enthralled by the short stories I’ve read so far. It’s lovely reading a bit more of the characters encountered in the Daevabad Trilogy. So far, a good read.
Here’s to a good week! I only have to work three days. Neat!
