those last days of January

How is it January is already over? And yet it feels like January was FOREVER. Isn’t it funny how time works?

TV

Sandokan – I should really like this show. Pirates, damsel in distress, a fair amount of diversity, etc are certainly ingredients to a good watch. And so far (two episodes in or so?), it’s been all right but I feel a resistance to some of the narrative. I’m going to be honest, it reminds me vaguely of Pirates of the Caribbean, but without the magic/supernatural bit. I totally dig Sandokan but I’m not sure I care about Marianna. I tell myself, she’s supposed to be young and doesn’t know the world quite yet and is probably supposed to be going through growth, so give her some leeway. I’m trying.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy – I am very much enjoying this show. The latest episode gave us an update on the Klingons and I really loved it. The Klingons are still proud and in need of a homeworld and won’t take what they consider charity. I definitely recommend this show, especially if you have an open mind and realize that this version of Star Trek is rising up from the devastation of The Burn. Some things aren’t the same. Heck, the Federation isn’t the same.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms – It’s nice having a Sunday night show to watch. Very much enjoying this one and I hope they get to the “twist” soon because IT IS SO OBVIOUS and why delay its reveal?! It’s fun watching the dynamic between Dunk and Egg. Dunk seems to be too good for that world and I hope he stays that way. Maybe I should read the novellas?

Quantum Leap – R is watching the reboot and I’m sort of watching with him. It’s been interesting so far. Almost bummed that we didn’t watch it when it was on the air. I like seeing Mason Alexander Park. They are such a smartie on this show and it makes me miss seeing them on The Sandman.

Flannel Friday
Flannel/Fangirl Friday

On Friday, I wore a flannel and as it wasn’t super cold, decided on the Herc/Xena vest jacket. And since I was wearing the vest jacket, I had some oatmeal in my Xena cup. Old school fangirling!

One of my co-workers commented on my vest jacket and I got to tell my Chris Conrad story! When I posted about receiving the vest jacket back in 2019, I didn’t mention Chris at all in the story but yes, he had a part. And I’m still ever thankful for such a sweet, sweet thing. He’s honestly one of the reasons I keep my Twitter account because we follow each other. 😛 I adore him and hope that one day, we meet and take a picture together after a big hug. Bonus if I’m wearing the vest jacket. Ha!

little flowers
  • We had a meeting on Friday with the city. Signed lots of papers. It’s getting real, y’all!
  • I have The Odyssey to read next. It’s the translation by Emily Wilson. I don’t think I’ve ever read The Odyssey in its entirety so this should be fun. If it’s good, I’m going to read The Iliad at some point.
  • I can’t stop listening to Riley Green. I guess I’m still giving him the Sam Hunt treatment. I’m listening to other artists, so maybe we’ll go with Sam Hunt treatment lite? Yes, sounds good. I often think of country music as, at its essence, simple and straightforward. Not saying it can’t be smart but for the most part, it’s storytelling and a bit ordinary. Riley Green embodies a lot of that simplicity and sometimes you just want music that’s simple and easy and comforting with good stories…
  • After spending a couple of hours in San Leandro, we drove down Hesperian Blvd and passed what used to be Festival Cinemas. It’s a parking lot now for shops, including Target, which sits on what used to be our back parking lot. Bet the whole space makes the city more money than Festival did but darn, it’s still sad to see the theatre gone.
the parking lot used to be Festival Cinemas
Alas, no more Festival Cinemas…

WRITING

It fascinates me when I get writer’s block. Or maybe I just have too many stories in my head and I get into phases where I can’t focus on one of those stories. Why can’t I focus? Maybe I’ll eventually figure it out. I really need to get back to that story I started before the last November novel. I could probably end it soon. Maybe I don’t want to end it soon and that’s why I keep stopping myself on writing more on it…

My busy time of year at work started this weekend. (The form went live on February 1st because I happened to wake up and remember to update the webpage.) I am almost dreading how much will be in my transfers in-box in the morning. Here we go!
